Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
